Future of Mobility and Cities

What are the mobility needs in 2050? How do they differ between urban and rural areas? What role will individual mobility and sharing concepts play? What value do we place on mobility?

We are exploring the technological and societal trends that will shape the future of mobility and cities. We are envisioning what vehicles and transportation infrastructure will look like in 2050 and identifying the paths that will lead us there. In doing so, we are initiating the discussions that we need to have today to make tomorrow’s future a reality.

In 2050, two-thirds of all people will live in cities. Public transportation is the key to fulfilling the basic need for mobility in urban areas.
How do we ensure that public transportation or alternatives replace (private) cars as the preferred means of transportation and relieve congestion in our cities?
By the year 2050, emission-free mobility will be commonplace. This applies not only to vehicles, but to the entire transportation infrastructure.
Besides new propulsion systems, what strategies should we pursue in urban and regional planning? How can city planners, public authorities, and mobility providers effectively work together?
Connectivity in 2050 will lead to a completely different mobility experience. Mobility will often be experienced as a service in the background.
How can we ensure that the necessary government regulations are in place, such as securing mobility infrastructure against cyber attacks or preventing the formation of monopolies?

These are just a few of the foreseeable trends and the associated societal and political questions. To avoid an increasing polarization of society, we need to start discussing these issues today. Insights gained from the discourse can help overcome fears and harness the potentials of the future.

What do you think?

Vehicles should be predominantly used for sharing purposes.
In cities, public transport in combination with bicycles, scooters, and walking should become the primary means of mobility.
Autonomous mobility should become standard.

White Paper “Future of Mobility and Cities”

Our white paper on the future of mobility and cities discusses the changes we might face in 2050. It develops hypotheses for a positive and realistic utopia and formulates milestones to reach that goal.

  • Should autonomous mobility become the standard in 2050?
  • Can urban centers be transformed into “cities of short distances” without forced mobility?
  • Can mobility concepts upgrade rural areas to the extent that further urbanization is counteracted?
